Local aviation expert says teen stowaway who survived Hawaiian flight might improve airport security

AKRON, Ohio - The 15-year-old boy that jumped the fence at a San Jose airport and hid in a wheel well of a commercial airline has raised a lot of questions about airport security.

Andrew Thomas, Ph.D., of the University of Akron is an aviation security expert. He has authored several books about aviation, travel and security.

Thomas said the boy has security officials taking a closer look and may actually make airports safer. "Complacency is always the enemy of security. We think we have done all that we need to do, and then an incident like this will reveal that we do have holes, we do have vulnerability, and it is time to be vigilant once again."

Thomas said overall air travel is a very safe way to travel.
