AKRON, Ohio - A defense attorney says a Massillon man who believed his wife was getting sicker "mentally snapped" and shot her to death as she lay in a hospital's intensive care unit.
The attorney told a jury in Akron on Monday that nothing in John Wise's past would've indicated he'd fatally shoot his wife of 45 years.
The 68-year-old Massillon man could face life in prison if convicted of killing her. He's pursuing an insanity defense.
Wise appeared teary-eyed as a prosecutor described the 2012 shooting during opening statements.
Prosecutor Brian LoPrinzi says Wise wrote an apologetic note before he took a taxi to the hospital and shot his wife with a pistol.
Friends of the couple call it a mercy killing, but that's not a legal defense in Ohio.
