Final leg of Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Bike and Hike Trail complete in Akron

AKRON, Ohio - It began 40 years years ago, but now the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Bike and Hike Trail is complete in Akron.

A ribbon cutting took place on Wednesday to commemorate the final leg of the trail, between Falor and Bartges streets, being finished.

It's about 10 miles long and runs through the heart of downtown Akron.

It cost $3 million to finish the last leg, with more than half of the funding coming from federal dollars.

Thousands of people use it on a regular basis, and Mayor Don Plusquellic called it a "great recreation facility for everyone."

Akron is the first major city in Ohio to complete the entire length of the hike and bike trail within its corporate limits.
