AKRON - During the State of the City Address, Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic suggested a merger between Akron General Hospital and Summa Health Systems.
Plusquellic said the duplication of emergency centers requires additional costs from the community.
The mayor went on to say this merger suggestion is not new. Past talks among the three Akron-area hospitals have taken place but each time competition among the hospitals prevented the idea from going further.
Plusquellic mentioned the need for only one provider for children. Akron Children's Hospital is a nationally-ranked hospital by U.S. News and World Report .
The Akron mayor said the city should proceed with the citizens' best interest as the motivator.
