AKRON, Ohio - Firefighters were called to a home at 1068 East Avenue in Akron around 2:10 p.m. Monday.
The family reported smelling smoke earlier Monday morning, but didn’t do anything about it. Later that day around 2:12 p.m. the smoke thickened, so the residents called 911.
Firefighters responded and found heavy smoke and flames showing towards the rear of the home.
Everyone in the home escaped safely.
Firefighters say the had a problem identifying the location of the fire once inside the home.
Firefighters later found that the fire started in the ceiling – and over time - spread to the bedroom and rec-room above the kitchen.
Also, no smoke alarms were in the home.
The house is considered a total loss since damages are estimated at $52,000. The house is only valued at $73,000.
The American Red Cross is assisting four adults with a place to stay
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
