Community comes together to honor Canton police K-9 Jethro, killed in the line of duty

CANTON, Ohio - The Canton community is coming together to remember a police K-9 killed in the line of duty.

Dozens of people braved the cold Sunday night to remember K-9 Jethro and to show their support for the Canton Police Department.

The news of Jethro's death has spread worldwide, with thousands of people sending their condolences to the police department using Facebook and Twitter.

At Sunday night's vigil, community members made their way downtown, clutching candles and praying.

Jethro was shot three times early Saturday while responding to an alarm at a grocery store.

Those who were fortunate enough to meet Jethro, said he was truly one of a kind.

"He was a unique dog," said Tammy Pierce, who attended the vigil Sunday. "Not too many dogs can turn it on and off and he could. He was a sweetheart. It's a shame this had to happen to him."

Liberty Tactical Equipment in Wooster is selling t-shirts to honor K-9 Jethro. All proceeds from those shirts will go toward the Canton police K-9 association.
