AKRON, Ohio - Akron Police responds to over 10,000 false alarm calls a year. In an effort to make better use of his resources, Chief James Nice said to look for a change in the departments policy in the near future.
Historically, two police cruisers responded to all security alarm calls, to ensure officer safety. Nice said 99 percent of those calls are false alarms, which take officers away from other calls.
The chief said, most likely later in 2014, his department will only respond to verified alarms, holdup alarms and panic alarms.
The police in the field will still be alerted to the alarm in their cruisers, and if not on another call, they will respond to the alarm. The difference is that they will not be dispatched and pulled from the mix for other calls.
