Big changes under way at the Akron Zoo as jellyfish leave

Grizzly Ridge coming

AKRON, Ohio - The Akron Zoo is starting to make way for its new Grizzly Ridge exhibit that will open in 2013.

The old bear exhibit is being demolished. The exhibit was built back in 1916 in the Perkins Park Woods long before the Akron Zoo opened. The exhibit first included Alaskan brown bears, and over the years has also housed Big Horned Sheep and turtles.

This is also the last season for the popular jellyfish exhibit. More than one million people have visited the exhibit since it opened in June 2008. The last day to see the jellyfish will be Oct. 31.

A new exhibit featuring creatures that live on and near the reef will replace the jellyfish in 2012.
