Armed robbery near University of Akron leads to chase and arrests

AKRON, Ohio - Universityof Akron police and Akron police caught two men, who according to police, robbed someone at gunpoint near the University of Akron just before 11 p.m. Wednesday.

According to Akron police, a private security company that patrols the area near the university saw the two suspects acting suspiciously and alerted University of Akron police.

About the same time a person reported they had been robbed at gunpoint near the intersection of Rankin and Brown streets. The victim was robbed of his cellphone, wallet, $4 in cash and a cigar.

The two suspects took off in a stolen SUV, police said. Both University of Akron police and Akron police chased the suspects. The chase went from downtown Akron to Fern Street and Vernon Odom Boulevard where the passenger jumped from the SUV while it was still moving at more than 30 miles per hour, according to police.

The driver went another block north on Fern Street before crashing through a fence and into the front porch of a home.

The driver then ran from the SUV. For about 40 minutes, both departments searched for the suspect before finding the man hiding on the front porch of a home on Ruth Avenue.

Police brought the victim to the scene. The victim positively identified the driver as one of the people involved in the robbery.

The driver, 18-year-old Dierre Payne of Akron, was arrested and charged with robbery, receiving stolen property and failure to comply with police orders.

Police were seen removing a handgun from the stolen SUV and placing it in an evidence bag.

The person who jumped from the SUV, a 16-year-old from Akron, was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He was taken to the Summit County Juvenile Detention Center.

The victim was not injured during the robbery.
