Akron Zoo to allow octopus to choose its own name

AKRON - The Akron Zoo has narrowed down its list of names for its octopus and is leaving it up to her to select her own name.

More than 1,400 names for submitted for the zoo's naming contest last month and three have made the cut.

The final three names for the octopus are Jet, Nani and Ollie. The names will be placed inside the octopus tank at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 10 for her to pick.

The three names will be placed on plastic pumpkins and whichever one she touches first will be her name.

The person who submitted the winning name will receive an octopus prize pack and a behind-the-scenes tour of the exhibit, Journey to the Reef.

If more than one person submitted the winning name, all participants' names will be placed into a random drawing for the prize.

The nameless octopus weighs about 8 pounds and is about four foot long from the top of her head to the end of her arms.
