Vets at the Akron Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center are working to nurse an emaciated dog back to life.

The Mahoning County Dog Shelter took the dog, named Sapphire, in as a stray and then she was taken to Canine Lifeline, Inc., a nonprofit organization whose mission is to save adoptable dogs from being euthanized for space or treatable medical conditions.

Now Sapphire is undergoing medical care at the Akron clinic, where she had surgery yesterday to remove fabric in her stomach that had perforated her intestine.

She is in guarded condition and still faces the risks that come with surgery, but Canine Lifeline is working to raise the thousands of dollars in medical bills the pup has already incurred.

Canine Lifeline and the vets involved have declined interview requests due to an ongoing investigation.
