Akron Public Schools sexual assault claims under investigation

AKRON, Ohio - Akron police, the city and school district are investigating allegations of sexual assaults that happened to a juvenile.

The mayor's office and school superintendent were made aware of the alleged incidents on Wednesday, but police said the incidents did not happen on school property and did not involve district faculty or staff.

Police and APS officials are actively investigating and that statements are being gathered, evidence is being collected and any videotapes reviewed.

Authorities are also working with the victim's family to make sure the victim's needs are being addressed. It's believed three students are involved.

Multiple sources said the alleged assaults happened near Firestone High School, but not on school property.

"We are taking these allegations seriously and want to protect the victim. We will do everything we can to find out what happened and take appropriate action after a thorough and complete investigation," said Mayor Don Plusquellic.

Superintendent David James says "very few" facts have been confirmed, but he assures his staff is working to sort it out.

"If the allegations are true, my heart goes out to the victim and the victim's family. This is truly reprehensible behavior," James said.

We will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.
