AKRON, Ohio - Retired Akron Police Officer Russ Long passed away after a three-month battle with cancer.
Long was forced to retire two decades ago after his police cruiser crashed into a utility pole while pursuing a speeding car. The accident left long unable to walk and unable to talk.
Despite those limitations, Long left a lasting legacy at the Akron Police Department. He was a regular at department events like the annual police memorial ceremony, to honor those fallen in the line of duty.
The Akron Police Department has started the process to have Long's name added to the memorial.
Long also talked, through a computer, to each rookie class about the dangers of being a police officer.
"He was the bravest officer that I have ever met," Akron Police Chief James Nice said.
