Akron mom pleads guilty after girl, 4, is burned

An Akron mom has pleaded guilty to child endangering after her 4-year-old daughter was scalded by hot water. 

Chavelle Grier, 21, pleaded guilty this week to two counts of endangering children.

newsnet5.com first told you about Grier in February when she was arrested.

Grier and the 17-year-old father were home on Feb. 4 when EMS arrived and found the baby crying on a towel. Paramedics notified police after realizing the seriousness of her injuries.

According to the police report, Ford told an officer, "I left her in the shower."

She was taken to Akron Children's Hospital for treatment of third-degree burns to her face, chest and arms.

During a 911 call, Grier told an operator that her daughter's face was burned by a lighter.

The operator asked, "How does a 5-month-old child get burned on the face with a lighter?"

"I don't know. I don't know how it happened," Grier responded.

According to the Summit County Prosecutor's Office, the child also had a fractured skull and other bruising. 

The father, who was 17 at the time of the incident, is charged in juvenile court with felonious assault, child endangering and domestic violence. Since he is now 18, there will be a hearing May 26 to determine if his case will move to adult court.
