Akron General Health System to lay off 132 employees

AKRON, Ohio - Akron General Health System will lay off 132 employees, they said Friday.

The reduction represents 2.5 percent of Akron General's workforce of more than 5,200 employees and is spread across sectors including management and non-management, as well as union and non-union jobs.

Another 50 vacant positions will not be filled.

In total, the moves will save Akron General about $12 million.

"This was an incredibly difficult decision, because it impacts our dedicated employees," said Tim Stover, President and CEO of Akron General Health System in a release. "We are working with each employee to ease the transition as much as we can."

The health system failed to meet budget targets in 2012 despite a number of other cuts.
