74th All-American Soap Box Derby attracts youth from around the world

AKRON, Ohio - What has come to be known as "the greatest amateur racing event in the world" took place for the 74th time Saturday in Akron.

500 racers from around the world gathered at Derby Downs for the All-American Soap Box Derby.

Competitors build their gravity-powered cars from kits they purchase and assemble them with the help of an adult or mentor.

Boys and girls between the ages of eight and 17 compete in local races throughout the year. The local champions then come to Akron to compete for the championship and a chance at scholarship awards.

In five of the six divisions, girls claimed the top spots.

Two local ladies, 16-year-old Allison Bates of Akron and 16-year-old Meghan Frantz of New Philadelphia, placed first in their divisions.
