MANSFIELD, Ohio - An escaped inmate in Mansfield remains on the loose and authorities need the public's help finding him.
The Mansfield Correctional Institution has confirmed inmate James David Myers escaped from the Mansfield Correctional Institution. Inmate Myers was last identified prior to the 9 p.m. head count.
According to records with the Department of Rehabilitation and Records, the 47 year-old-man is designated as a sexually violent offender. Myers is 5 feet 11 inches tall and 172 pounds.
In July 2010, Myers followed a woman home from a bar, entered her home and repeatedly raped her throughout the night, according to the Summit County Prosecutor's Office. They said he left the next morning but was spotted outside her home several times over the course of several days after the rape.
A jury convicted him of numerous charges including rape with a firearm specification, kidnapping with a firearm specification, aggravated burglary, OUI and menacing by stalking. A judge sentenced Myers to life in prison with parole eligibility after 40 years.
The crimes were reported to have been committed in Summit County.
At a news conference Thursday afternoon, troopers said they are providing protection for Myers' victim. Troopers and the prison warden were unable to release details about how the inmate escaped, as the investigation is ongoing.
