The MetroHealth System is growing its options for members who have HealthSpan insurance.

MetroHealth hired more than 40 HealthSpan physicians to join the hospital system in April. An additional 25 specialty providers are expected to join in the near future, MetroHealth said in a press release.

The network is designed to improve chronic care management and lower the cost of care for patients and communities throughout Ohio.

Several HealthSpan facilities will be provided care by MetroHealth including two new freestanding emergency departments in Cleveland Heights and Parma, as well as the offices in Bedford and Rocky River. This means the majority of HealthSpan members in Northeast Ohio will be able to continue receiving care from their current physicians at their current locations.

The MetroHealth System today announced plans that it will continue to expand its presence throughout Northeast Ohio and expand options for members of HealthSpan’s insurance plans to receive care.
MetroHealth has hired more than 40 HealthSpan primary care physicians who will join The MetroHealth System on April 1 when HealthSpan Physicians exits the Northeast Ohio market as a direct care provider. An additional 25 specialty providers are expected to join in the near future.
MetroHealth has also joined Advanced Health Select (AHS), the largest clinically integrated network in Ohio. The network, jointly created by Cincinnati-based Mercy Health - the largest health system in Ohio - and Summa Health of Akron, is designed to improve chronic care management and lower the cost of care for patients and communities throughout Ohio.
Through this collaboration, MetroHealth will be a preferred provider for HealthSpan’s Northeast Ohio members.
In addition, MetroHealth plans to provide care at several of HealthSpan’s existing facilities, including Cleveland Heights, Parma, Bedford and Rocky River on April 1. This is in keeping with MetroHealth’s commitment to improve access to health care for every resident of Cuyahoga County, and it means the majority of HealthSpan members in Northeast Ohio will be able to continue receiving care from their current physicians in their current locations.
The continuity of care will enable a smooth transition for HealthSpan members, according to MetroHealth CEO Akram Boutros, MD, FACHE. “We are very pleased to welcome these physicians to MetroHealth,” Boutros said. “They are closely aligned with our mission of building a healthier community. Their experience in population health and commitment to their patients will be enormously beneficial to increase access, improve quality and transform care.”
“The advantage of an integrated care network is that it enables collaboration among members to improve quality, efficiency and cost effectiveness for all patients within the network,” said Boutros. “Like MetroHealth, Mercy and Summa are mission-driven. We look forward to collaborating with them so we can share best practices in patient care and wellness.”
“Advanced Health Select puts Mercy Health, Summa Health and now MetroHealth at the forefront of healthcare transformation,” said Brent Asplin, MD, chief clinical officer at Mercy
Health and AHS president. “We are pleased that MetroHealth will join us to extend the continuityof care in Northeast Ohio.”
Through MetroHealth’s affiliation with AHS, HealthSpan members will have access to
MetroHealth’s entire provider network, including more than 250 primary care physicians at more
than 20 locations. Mercy Health Select and NewHealth Collaborative, the accountable care
organizations operated by Mercy and Summa, will continue to provide care within their local
markets.
“This is a unique opportunity for MetroHealth to expand access to care for patients throughout
the communities we serve – and do it without building new centers,” Boutros said. “As we work
to transform care, one of our goals is to develop key partnerships that will improve quality and
value. This opportunity is in keeping with that goal. It’s good for our patients and it’s good for our
community.”
