A team of Cleveland Clinic transplant surgeons and gynecological surgeons performed the nation's first uterus transplant during a nine-hour surgery on Wednesday, the hospital reported.

Cleveland Clinic said the 26-year-old patient was in stable condition on Thursday. The transplanted uterus came from an organ donor who died.

The hospital said it began screening candidates for uterus transplants in late 2015, as part of a clinical trial approved by Cleveland Clinic's Institutional Review Board.

The research team included transplant specialists, obstetricians and gynecologists, bioethicists, psychiatrists, nurses and social workers. The Clinic said more candidates are being screened with Uterine Factor Infertility, an irreversible condition effecting 3-5 percent of women worldwide.
