Thirteen-year-old Arvind Mahankali of New York has won the Scripps National Spelling bee.
HARTVILLE, Ohio - In late March, Scott Markle won The Repository Regional Final Spelling Bee to qualify for the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Markle, an eighth grade student at Lake Center Christian School in Hartville, has memorized almost 5,000 words to prepare him for the event.
"It's all thanks to my mom that I am right here. She goes hours a day working with me. Every time I miss a word, she makes me write it out and look up the definition and language of origin and everything. Without her, I definitely would not be this far."
He also spends hours online studying the words. Scott has been doing this for years and enjoys every minute of it. His friends call him "The Walking Dictionary."
The Scripps National Spelling Bee begins Tuesday with computer-based testing. The championship finals take place on May 30 from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. and will be televised live on ESPN.
