Yes, it's almost that time of year. And students at Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy are going about prom a different way this year.

They're throwing out tradition by not spending hundreds on a dress, nails and makeup. Instead, the Akron students are ditching their shopping list and swapping dresses, all for a good cause.

The idea

"It kind of just spiraled into something so much bigger than we intended it to," said Alexa Mahajan, a senior at CVCA High School and one of the students behind the whole idea.

A fashion show, showing off their donated prom and homecoming dresses this year, is just one of the things the group of junior and senior girls at the high school came up with as they swap them with each other, instead of buying brand new ones.

In return, the money they would spend on their prom makeover will go toward RAHAB Ministries, a local organization saving women who have been sex trafficked in our area.

The goal

Getting many of their fellow students to participate, their goal is to raise $10,000 by prom night on May 6.

So far, they're about halfway to meeting that goal and have gotten more than 200 dresses donated in just less than a month.

The students say it feels good to give back to something that could impact so many lives.

"God placed it on my heart for me to be able to show the other girls at CVCA what RAHAB is and to be able to give back," said Kylie Aiken, a Junior at CVCA High School.

The money raised will be going toward building a safe house at RAHAB for younger girls, ages 11-17, who are victims of sex and human trafficking in the area.
