Man Charged With Allegedly Killing Officer Held Without Bond

CLEVELAND -- The man charged with shooting and killing a Cleveland police officer this week was ordered held without bond.Wilson Santiago was arraigned Saturday in a Cleveland courtroom filled with patrolmen, Chief Mike McGrath and Commander Ed Tomba.Santiago was charged with one count of aggravated murder with law enforcement specifications in connection with the death of police detective Jonathan Schroeder, NewsChannel5 reported.Schroeder was described in court as one of the finest of Cleveland's finest."You probably know him as being one of the most gregarious, personable, friendly, kindest people to ever walk through this Justice Center. You probably know him by his infectious smile that will never grace this courtroom again," said assistant prosecutor Michael Kenny.The 37-year-old suspect was also charged with aggravated burglary and rape. Schroeder and other officers were attempting to serve a warrant for these alleged crimes when the shooting occurred.Schroeder, along with the 1st District vice unit, was serving the arrest warrant in the 2000 block of West 98th Street near Madison Avenue just before midnight Wednesday.Officials revealed that there have been several police calls made to the home where Schroeder was fatally shot. All 36 calls, however, did not involve Santiago.Schroeder is a 10-year veteran. He is survived by his wife, Amy, and his 8-month-old son, Eric.Santiago will be in court again for a preliminary hearing. He could face the death penalty if convicted.
