CLEVELAND -- The man accused of shooting and killing a Cleveland police officer this week was charged on Friday.Wilson Santiago was charged with one count of aggravated murder with law enforcement specifications in connection with the death of Officer Jonathan Schroeder, NewsChannel5 reported. The 37-year-old suspect was also charged with aggravated burglary and rape. Schroeder and other officers were attempting to serve a warrant for these alleged crimes when the shooting occurred.Schroeder, along with the 1st District vice unit, was serving the arrest warrant in the 2000 block of West 98th Street near Madison Avenue just before midnight Wednesday.Officials revealed that there have been several police calls made to the home where Schroeder was fatally shot. All 36 calls, however, did not involve Santiago.Schroeder is a 10-year veteran. He is survived by his wife, Amy, and his 8-month-old son, Eric.Friday, Schroeder's brother, Jeff Scroeder, released the following statement on behalf of the family:"On behalf of the entire Schroeder family I would like to express our gratitude and heartfelt thanks to the law enforcement community and the people of the greater Cleveland area for their outpouring of support and their prayers during this most difficult time. We would ask for the continued respect of our privacy while our family deals with this tragedy."In addition to his family, others are trying to deal with the tragic untimely loss of Schroeder, WEWS reported.Schroeder was a special part of the West Side neighborhood where he lived.People in the neighborhood said he was known as "Smiley," because he always had a smile on his face.He was also never known for turning someone away who need his help. Louise Solary lives across the street from the Schroeder family. She said she feels for Amy, adding her husband is a longtime officer with the University Circle Police Department."I don't know how she's going to get through the days ahead, especially with the baby," said Solary. He's not going to see his dad. It's a tragedy. I don't know. She's not even thinking right now. I'm fine until I start thinking about John, and then I get outraged. I'm just so angry this happened to him."The Cleveland Police Department has made a high bond request for Santiago. The suspect will be arraigned on Saturday.Santiago could face the death penalty if convicted.
