Police Imposter Caught Scamming Fast-Food Refunds

POSTED: 10:16 am EDT August 20, 2006

A man was caught on camera impersonating a police officer.

The fake officer claimed he was in the middle of a major investigation in Middlefield Village, just east of Chagrin Falls.

Instead, NewsChannel5 crime specialist Joe Pagonakis reported that he turned out to be a quick-talking con man looking for free food.

The fast-food bandit was seen on McDonald's surveillance video taking a $6 refund for a combo he never purchased, and then walked out the door.

"I've been in law enforcement for several years and I've never seen anything like this," Middlefield police officer Ed Samec said.

Samec said the man claimed he was a Cleveland Heights police officer, even wearing a shirt that had a police shield printed on the front.

The fake officer complained that his food had a hair in it and demanded a refund.

The man didn't just stop at McDonald's, he also duped KFC out of a nine-piece bucket of chicken. He then hit Wendy's for a refund on a single with cheese and his final stop was at Burger King for a flame broiled burger.

Pagonakis said it appeared some of the food came out of the garbage.

The cost of his returned food got him a total of $16.17.

Police are looking for the fake officer. When he's caught, he'll face a felony for his impersonation.

Middlefiled police describe the impostor as being in his late 30s or early 40s, weighing 190 pounds to 215 pounds. He has brown slicked-back hair, a mustache, blue polo shirt with light blue jeans.

Anyone with information should contact Middlefield police at 440-632-5224.
