Local Seniors To Rebel Against Rent Hike
Kucinich To Get Involved In Fight

OLMSTED TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- Many landlords raise rent on a regular basis, but a group of people in Olmsted Township are not happy about a rent hike in their community.
As NewsChannel5's Tracy Carloss reports, they don't plan on taking it sitting down.
It's an old-fashioned neighborhood -- a mobile home park that caters to those 55 and older. But neighbors in the quiet community are making a lot of noise.
"It's more than a slap in the face," retired nurse Lillian Snyder said. "It hurts, and we are bitter."
Snyder and her neighbors are planning a rebellion.
Residents own their homes, but not the land. A new owner took over the reins at Columbia Park and raised the rent.
"He thinks he got a bunch of senior fogies who are sitting in rocking chairs, waiting for their day to come," Snyder said. "He woke up a sleeping giant."
Neighbors said that they have to pay between 17 and 32 percent more, which is an outrage, especially to those who live on a fixed income.
"A lot of people give up medicine, cancel newspapers and a lot of other things they have to give up," Pat Patterson of the President Homeowners Group said. "They have limited income and no money to fall back on."
Now they're planning the biggest rent strike in the state's history. On Monday, they'll pay their rent to the court.
"They set up an escrow account," Mike Foley of the Cleveland Tenants' Organization said. "The money sits there until a negotiated settlement or until the owners come in and comply with what they want and give money back now."
The new landlords are located out of state, but NewsChannel5 did reach one by phone. Ken Burnham said that the rent was increased because it was considerably lower than comparable parks. He said that they feel that with the services offered at the park, people are still getting a bargain, even with the rent hike.
Neighbors will pay their rent to Berea Municipal Court Monday.
The group is taking along some support: U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich will also be there.
