Jason Nicholas

Award-winning meteorologist Jason Nicholas joined the Power of 5 Weather Team in June 2006 and can be seen delivering forecasts weekdays on "Good Morning Cleveland."

In 2008, Jason became the first meteorologist in Cleveland to earn the coveted Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) seal from the American Meterological Society (AMS). The CBM is the highest level of certification from the AMS and is granted to broadcast meteorologists who meet established criteria for scientific competence and effective communication skills in their weather presentations. The CBM is an upgrade to the AMS Seal of Approval, which Jason also held prior to his CBM designation. Jason has also been awarded the NWA Seal of Approval from the National Weather Association (NWA). He is a member of both professional organizations.

In addition to his weathercasting duties, Jason also hosts NewsChannel 5's multiple Emmy award-winning show, Academic Challenge. The quiz show highlights high school students from around the region and can be seen Saturday evenings at 7PM. Jason also hosts the Scripps Network's DIY Weekend home improvement show which airs Sunday mornings at 11AM on NewsChannel 5.

Jason is a Cleveland native and grew up in nearby Medina. He's a graduate of the prestigious E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University and is a proud lifetime Ohio Bobcat! He studied Meteorology at Mississippi State University and successfully completed the Broadcast Meteorology Program there in 2004.

Before heading back home to Northeast Ohio, Jason spent more than two years in the desert Southwest at KRQE-TV in Albuquerque, N.M. While there, Jason's forecasts were recognized multiple times by the New Mexico Associated Press for excellence. Jason also spent close to four years in West Virginia working first at WSAZ-TV in Huntington, W.V. and more recently at WCHS-TV in Charleston, W.V.

Jason loves to play golf. When he's not forecasting, you can bet he's taking advantage of one of the many great golf courses in the area. He enjoys the ever-changing weather of northeast Ohio, boating on Lake Erie and is also a huge Cleveland sports fan. He rarely misses tuning in to a Cavaliers, Indians or Browns game.

If you see Jason out in the field, please stop and introduce yourself. You can also e-mail him at nicholas@newsnet5.com.
