Judge Rules GEM Chemical Plant Can Reopen

City Requested Restraining Order To Keep Plant Closed After Fire

POSTED: 3:47 pm EDT May 17, 2006

A judge ruled Wednesday that a chemical plant in Cleveland's industrial Flats can reopen.

The Cleveland Municipal Court housing division denied the city's request for General Environmental Management to remain closed.

The plant was closed in April after an explosion and fire at the facility, and the city requested a temporary restraining order to keep it shut down.

The company said it was pleased with the ruling, and hopes to being recalling employees and restarting the plant.

"General Environmental Management is gratified that Judge Pianka denied the city's request for a continued shutdown of our facility and that we will be able to begin the process of restarting our plant," said GEM President Eric Lofquist.

Company executives said they are committed to working with the city and the community while they rebuild the plant and bring it up to code.
