Plan For Browns Stadium Dome Unveiled To City Council

Supporters Of Dome Hope It Would Attract Super Bowl To City

POSTED: 5:25 pm EDT May 11, 2006

Should Cleveland Browns Stadium be covered to attract a possible Super Bowl to the city?

Cleveland city leaders on Thursday got their first look at the plan for putting a retractable dome on the stadium and are now mulling over the question about whether it should be done.

Bob Corna Talks About Dome

Local developer Bob Corna and Cleveland City Councilman Mike Polensek have teamed up and approached everyone from the Browns to Mayor Frank Jackson.

"For us to continue to do major projects without having a vision, without having a broader plan, has been disasterous and will continue to be disasterous," said Polensek.

At Wednesday's City Council meeting, Corna and Polensek met with the Browns, Browns backers and the mayor. And while no one has made a concrete decision yet, everyone agreed on one thing: the Browns need to figure out what to do with the stadium the rest of the year, other than the 10 games played there each season.

Corna said his recent meeting with the mayor also had promise.

Do you think the city should put a retractable dome on Cleveland Browns Stadium?
"He's definately open to a good idea. He's open to an idea to at least check it out. That to me was worth the whole meeting," said Corna.

Councilman Joe Santiago said he's just one of many Council members on board for the retractable dome.

"I haven't heard any reservations. I think the biggest problem we have to look at is who's going to pay it? Our taxpayers are over-taxed right now," said Santiago.

Santiago said he thinks fundraisers and financial help from local businesses may be the key to getting the dome.

Polensek said while the dome would cost $90 million to make, having the Super Bowl in town is projected to generate $200 million in one day alone.

City Council will vote on Monday on a resolution to bring the idea to the NFL.
