CLEVELAND -- The debacle with the new electronic voting machines and new scanners is the focus of an investigation that started today, NewsChannel5 reported. As part of the investigation, Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell has coordinated a team of senior election officials and legal staff from his office to meet with officials at the Cuyahoga Board of Elections.Problems at the polls during the May 2 primary elections include absent workers, long delays at the polls, inadequately staffed locations and poorly trained workers, WEWS reported.Absentee-ballot scanners also didn't work, causing the need for thousands of ballots to be counted by hand.Blackwell is also calling for an internal review and report to be submitted to his office, detailing what went wrong and why by the end of the week.WEWS was told that there will be consequences, like recommendations on changes in procedure or removal of election officials."It's a lot of poll workers I talked to and they said they didn't know how to work the machines," said Elenor Carter. "That should not have happened."Another citizen, George Zeller, said, "Obviously there needs to be an investigation. When you have an election, they ought to be able to count the votes. That should be simple and it didn't happen."
