Hazardous Materials Plant Shut Down Overnight

CLEVELAND -- There are several new developments after a huge explosion Thursday that injured six workers, NewsChannel5 reported.General Environmental Management treats hazardous chemicals from industrial waste. The Environmental Protection Agency has been working through the night to contain and clean up hazardous waste water that ran off and spilled into a nearby creek. They are trying to prevent the spill from moving into the Cuyahoga River, WEWS reported.
Explosion Sparks Blaze At Hazmat Facility The explosion and fire started about 12:30 Thursday afternoon. The facility is located in an industrial area just west of downtown Cleveland.The Ohio EPA and Cleveland firefighters shut GEM down Thursday night.Investigators said welding was being performed on a tank filled with methanol and acetone used in products like nail polish when the explosion happened.Neighbors who talked to NewsChannel5 said GEM needs to be a better neighbor if it reopens."Nobody wants to see a loss of business or jobs, but make sure the property is safe," said Fred Calatrello.Cleveland’s Health Commissioner Matt Carrol said GEM has a lot to prove before it ever reopens.Of the six workers injured, three workers remain in MetroHealth Medical Center.The investigation is ongoing.NewsChannel5 will have the latest information as it becomes available.
