Survivor Of Crash Hopes Repeat Drunken Driver Feels Guilty

Dasilva Lost Sight In One Eye

UPDATED: 6:21 pm EDT April 12, 2006

The Hiram College student who was seriously injured in a head-on collision that killed two of his classmates will soon be released from the hospital, NewsChannel5 reported.

Evan Dasilva, 19, spent weeks fighting for his life. He said Wednesday that he leaves the hospital with only one request.

"I think he should feel guilty and I hope they put him away for life," said Dasilva.

Officials said the accident was caused by repeat drunken driver James Cline, 47, on May 2. Cline had 11 previous drunken driving convictions. Cline faces 13 counts, including aggravated vehicular homicide, involuntary manslaughter and drunken driving in connection with the accident. He is in jail on a separate drunken driving conviction.

Grace Chamberlain and Andrew Hopkins, both 18, died in the crash.

Dasilva and his friends were heading home for spring break at the time of the crash.

He has been involved in physical therapy, suffered several broken bones and has undergone eight surgeries. He has also lost sight in one eye.

Dasilva is making it his life's mission to keep history from repeating itself.

"Someone who has 11 DUIs should not be allowed to drive, and this is just disgusting how wrong this is and the laws need to change," he said.

Dasilva doesn't remember the accident that killed Chamberlain and Hopkins.

"I know why I survived primarily because I was in the back seat it has been hard knowing my two best friends are gone," he said.

Dasilva is expected to leave northeast Ohio in a couple of days and head home to Rhode Island. Doctors expected the wire that's holding his jaw together to come off in a couple of weeks.

He expects to be back at Hiram College in the fall.
