Suspect In Fatal Crash Had 12 Previous DUIs

Local College Student Killed, 2 Injured When Pickup Slams Car

POSTED: 5:46 pm EST March 9, 2006

The family of a local college student is demanding answers after the 18-year-old was killed in a crash allegedly caused by a man with a long history of drunken-driving arrests.

Hiram College student Grace Chamberlain, of Kirtland, was in a car with two friends in Burton Township when they were hit head-on by a pickup truck. The driver of the car was allegedly fleeing from police.

Chamberlain was killed in the crash, and the two other occupants remain in critical condition at MetroHealth Medical Center.

Burton police had earlier tried to stop the pickup truck's driver, James Cline, after receiving reports of an erratic driver, but Cline sped away.

Police said Cline had a blood alcohol level nearly four times the legal limit. The main question the Chamberlain family wants answered is why Cline, who has had 12 drunken-driving convictions since 1984, was on the road.

An attorney for the family said it wants to get to the bottom of what happened, because there are still many things about the crash it does not know.

Other questions include where Cline had been drinking that night and what role the Burton police played in their pursuit of Cline.
