WILLOWICK, Ohio -- Residents at a Willowick apartment complex found themselves trapped by a man with a gun Sunday, NewsChannel5 reported.

Police said the man kicked in an apartment on the sixth floor of the Shoregate Apartment Towers. His wife was inside.

As officers arrived, the gunman ran to the stairwell, cutting off an escape route for residents.

"As we were going up the stairwell, we could hear the cops saying 'Don't hurt yourself, I'm just trying to help you,'" said resident Lacey Jerla.

The gunman surrendered an hour after the incident started and no one was hurt.

There is no word on a motive.
