CLEVELAND -- The holidays are one of the busiest times of the year at major shopping malls. But how much do you know about what goes on at the malls you trust? A 5 On Your Side investigation analyzed crime data since January 2004 at 11 major shopping malls across northeast Ohio. From Elyria to Mentor, south to Akron and Canton and all over Cleveland -- find out how your local mall stacked up. No. 5 when it comes to crime is Belden Village Mall in Canton. 911 call: "A guy just had a gun and he told me to get into my car."
Mall Crime Report Timothy Allen Peavy tried to kidnap a teenage girl who escaped and called police, NewsChannel5's Ron Regan reported. Eight shoppers had their cars stolen in the parking lot. Great Northern in North Olmsted is No. 4 in the crime statistics. There were 10 cars stolen and 16 more broken into. And one man was busted as a peeping Tom, Regan said. Parmatown comes in at No. 3. It has 17 stolen cars and eight break-ins. No. 2 was Rolling Acres Mall in Akron. The mall had 26 stolen cars and 14 break-ins. The mall with the most reported crime is Chapel Hill in Akron.Regan's investigation took NewsChannel5 inside Ohio's prison system to find out why the No. 1 mall is such an easy target.Deante Jackson was convicted of kidnapping and robbing 18-year-old Lisa Wade at Chapel Hill Mall. Regan: "Did you ever worry that someone would see you? Did you ever worry about security?" Jackson: "No, because I knew there was none. For real. No, I didn't." Regan: "Because you knew there was none and that made it easier for you?" Jackson: "Yeah, if there was security it would have stopped me from doing some of the things I was blamed for." Mall security apparently hasn't done much to make things safer in the two years since Jackson committed his crime, Regan reported.Chapel Hill had 27 stolen cars, 37 more broken into and a man was busted as a peeping Tom in May. Regan went to Chapel Hill Mall and drove the parking lot looking for any signs of security. Regan found security parked and it never moved once for a full 90 minutes. Regan wanted to speak with mall management about what was discovered. Regan: "We've been trying to reach you. We're trying to talk to you about crime at the mall." Manager: "I'm sorry sir, there's nothing we can (comment on) at the time, OK?" Regan: "Well, you've got the most stolen cars at any mall we looked at." Manager: "Sorry, you have to leave the premises." Regan: "What do you have to say to customers about their safety?" Manager: "You'll have to leave." The crime report for other area malls include:
- Tower City -- 8 auto thefts
- Great Lakes -- 8 auto thefts
- Summit Mall -- 7 auto thefts
- Midway Mall -- 5 auto thefts
- Southpark Mall -- 4 auto thefts
