CLARKSFIELD TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- Sheriff's officials met with the Huron County prosecutor Monday to consider charges against a Clarksfield Township couple accused of putting their adoptive children in cages.Investigators said Sharen and Michael Gravelle locked nine of their 11 children, ages 1 to 14, in cages at night. And now, prosecutor Russell Leffler said the confinement to cages was not limited to the night: He said that children were put in what the parents describe as boxes during the day for punishment. He said that although the enclosures were not locked, the children were afraid to leave because an alarm would sound, alerting their parents.NewsChannel5 also learned that subpoenas have been issued for medical and psychiatric records. Reports from children's services are also expected soon. The prosecutor is considering child endangerment and unlawful containment charges among others in this case, NewsChannel5 reported. An attorney for the Gravelles said they are enclosures, because the children had special needs and were in danger of getting injured. The adopted children have been placed in foster care.Officials say it will be at least a week before any charges will be filed against the couple. There is no word yet on whether the case will be presented to the grand jury when it convenes next month.
