CLEVELAND -- Police still have not made any arrests in the tragic East 87th Street arson fire that killed nine people, but investigators are finding out more about the fatal fire.
NewsChannel5's Joe Paganakis learned that three of the children did try to escape the deadly smoke that engulfed the home. He also reported that investigators are in desperate need of new leads in the case. The May fire claimed the lives of eight children and one mother, making it the deadliest house fire in Cleveland history. Police Cmdr. Ed Tomba is leading the investigation of the arson, and he revealed exclusively to NewsChannel5 that three of the eight children tried to escape from the deadly smoke. He said the three children were found together by a closet, which they may have thought was an exit. But the children were overcome by the heat and smoke before they could escape. Friends and family continue to mourn the loss of the nine people, almost three months later, and search for closure. There have been no new leads in the case for the past two weeks; police are urging anyone with information to come forward to help bring the arsonist to justice. Please contact Crime Stoppers with any information at (216) 252-7463. It is anonymous, and you could receive a $20,000 reward.
