LORAIN, Ohio -- A motorist called 911 Saturday from the roof of his car as water started to rise quickly at a Lorain underpass. The man said that help was needed immediately or people still in their car were going to die. In fact, Walter and Mary Jane Kalinowski's car was in about 10 feet of water caused by a flash flood. By the time emergency crews could get the car out, it was too late. (Full Story) Images | 911 Call | All About Floods The couple drowned at the East 21st Street underpass. Officials said several major roads were flooded when storms dumped about 2.8 inches of water on the area in 30 minutes. The community was being very vocal Monday about the spot where the couple lost their lives. "When you got a traffic light here and you're at the bottom of that thing there and it comes up like it flood it did, there's no way out cause everybody's still in front of you and your car died," Jeffery Guncer said.
Red Cross Helps Flood Victims
More than 100 families have gotten help from the Red Cross after weekend flooding. In less than an hour, several inches of rain fell and the floodwaters rose quickly inside the Sheffield Village Apartments, NewsChannel5 reported. One resident said that in 10 minutes her entire apartment was flooded. And that was the same story for many people who just started helping one another. "Everybody sort of pitched in together, helped everybody get stuff that they needed to get out real quick," Mike Swirsky said. The cleanup continued Monday for the 56 apartments that got hit by high water. The 106 families affected are staying with relatives, have moved into open apartments or being helped by the Red Cross. Thirteen volunteers from the Red Cross responded to calls for help.Copyright 2006 by NewsNet5. All rights reserved.
