Friends, family and neighbors are remembering nine people killed Saturday in a house fire on Cleveland's east side.

Eleven people were inside the home when the fire broke out at 3 a.m. Two adults and seven children died.

"It was just nothing but fire just shooting like Godzilla was just sitting there with four of his friends and they all got fire going. That's how bad it was," said neighbor Lahemma Collins.

A mother and her six children lived in the 99-year-old home. One of her children was holding a sleepover to celebrate his 15th birthday.

One of the injured is in critical but stable condition. A man living in the basement didn't require hospital treatment.

The children ranged in ages from 4 to 15.

The victims have been identified by the Cuyahoga County Coroner:
  • Medeia Carter, 33
  • Devonte Carter, 15
  • Antwon Jackson, 14
  • Moses Williams, 14
  • Ernest Tate, 13
  • Miles Cockfield, 13
  • Shauntavia Mitchell, 12
  • Maleeya Williams, 11
  • Fakih Jones, 7

This is the most fatalities in a house fire in Cleveland history, officials said.

Two of the victims were related to Cleveland firefighters. One was the nephew of an assistant fire chief and one was the cousin of a firefighter. One was the grandson of a school principal and another victim's mother worked at City Hall.

Three of the victims died from smoke inhalation.

Neighbors said they tried to help put out the fire but said the flames were too much.

Fire officials believe the blaze started on the first floor. All of the victims were found on the second floor.

Investigators are trying to determine how the fire started. It is believed the fire was accidental.

There were smoke detectors in the home. Officials aren't sure if they were working.

Neighbors said the mother was very concerned about the safety of her children and others. The mayor of Cleveland called her a caring mother.

Mayor Jane Campbell asked for everyone to pray for the family and the community.

A vigil is planned Sunday at 8 p.m. for the neighbors and will be held each night until the funeral.

The Red Cross has offered counseling to the neighborhood.

Donations are being accepted at any Key Bank.
