Questions Surround Drug Record Of Slain Doctor's Wife

Police Won't Say If Record Effects Turnpike Murder Investigation

POSTED: 6:22 pm EDT May 19, 2005

The slaying of a Pennsylvania doctor on the Ohio Turnpike grows even more mysterious as details are revealed about a past drug conviction of the doctor's wife.

Dr. Gulam Moonda's wife, Donna Moonda, and his mother-in-law say the man's killing last week along the turnpike was a random act of violence.

Authorities say Moonda was shot and killed by a robber when the three were pulled over on the side of the road.

NewsChannel5 chief investigator Duane Pohlman spoke with the state highway patrol, who said that the investigation is now "wide open."

Troopers insist they are investigating what they believe was a robbery and murder just a few miles past the Strongsville entrance.

But what's clouding this up are court documents showing that Donna Moonda was convicted last year of drug abuse.

Then a nurse at a hospital in Greenvale, Pa., Donna Moonda, was accused of diverting "excess fentanyl," an opiate, which she would "self inject."

At the time, the woman admitted that she had a problem and needed help.

Police are aware of the conviction but won't comment what role, if any, it is playing.

In an interview with a Pittsburgh television station after the slaying, Donna Moonda described what happened right after the shooting.

"I ran over to his side. He never responded. He never said anything to me. There was a lot of blood," said Donna Moonda. "He died that night. I did, too."

The highway patrol says people have called their tip line, stating they spotted a dark minivan and a man on the side of the road, which matches the description given by the wife and her mother.
