COPLEY, Ohio -- The first stop for 5 On Your Side's Streets of Speed investigation is Ridge Crest Drive in Copley. Police have targeted this normally quiet street, filled with children.Michael Mier, Copley Police Chief: That's why we try to get folks within our own community to drive at the speed limit.Pohlman: But cars here continue to fly. Mothers have long complained.Pohlman: The speed limit says 25.
Driver: I didn't even notice.
E-MAIL: Streets Of Speed Pohlman: To test speeds, I'm using our 5 On Your Side radar gun and before you say it's not accurate, I put it to the test going side-by-side with Copley's Police Chief Michael Mier.Pohlman: The chief is using a top-of-the-line laser gun. Time after time, our guns got the same or similar readings. The chief was impressed.Mier: I think you're getting a pretty accurate speed.Pohlman: Still, it's important to remember our gun is being used only as a test of speed. You won't see us writing tickets. We're not the cops. Our job is to clock the speeds and to confront the drivers.Pohlman: What do you have to say?
Driver: I apologize ... very sorry.
Along the way, you'll hear all kinds of excuses.Pohlman: But remember, this is all about safety. We're on a mission -- slowing people down -- and protecting our children.Pohlman: Up first, a silver minivan makes its way to our position. I clock it at 34 mph, nine miles over the speed limit. The driver blames the hill.Driver: I think it's hard to keep it going down the hill at 25 here.Pohlman: Next up is a black SUV.Driver: Was I speeding?
Pohlman: I just got you at 35.
Driver: OK.
Some drivers wanted nothing to do with me. I clocked this Taurus at 35......An Olds at 34 and a Yukon at 33.Pohlman: Some drivers didn't even try to give me a reason. Others, like the driver of a silver SUV who I clocked at 35, seemed to have a good reason to be in a hurry.Driver: I'm on my way. They just called me from school. I have to pick up my daughter.Pohlman: Then, there were those who, well, tried.Pohlman: Why were you going so fast?Pohlman: I clocked this van at 34.Driver: I was just trying to come up that hill, and it climbed out and planed out when I got up to the top of the hill.Pohlman: I'm still trying to figure out what that means. Then, there was this excuse.Driver: It's my first day of summer school.
Pohlman: All right. And that's why you were speeding?
Driver: Yeah.
Pohlman: I clocked a Sunfire at 36.
Pohlman: The driver gave a very sincere apology.
Driver: I really feel bad now. I'm sorry!
