DNA From 100,000 Inmates Could Help Solve Crimes

Ohio Begins Collecting DNA Wednesday

POSTED: 10:16 am EDT May 18, 2005

The state Ohio will begin collecting DNA from more than 100,000 felons currently serving time, on probation or out on parole.

The DNA will be entered into a national crime-fighting database, NewsChannel5 reported.

State Attorney General Jim Petro said the new law will help detectives revive long dormant investigations and deter convicts for committing more crimes.

The database uses biological matches from current felons to link with evidence from unsolved crimes.

Current law requires the DNA tests of Ohio's most serious felons, but does not include crimes such as auto theft, receiving stolen property and fraud.

Ohio hopes to have its first matches to unsolved crimes by this summer once laboratories test the results.
