9 Akron Schools Could Be Closed

Task Force Recommends Closures

UPDATED: 8:42 am EDT April 26, 2005

School closings are on the horizon in Akron as the district tries to close a $26 million budget gap.

Central Hower
A task force recommended closing nine schools, including two high schools and 7 elementary schools. One or two could be merged if they aren't closed.

The list of proposed closings:
  • Cenral-Hower High School
  • East High or Goodyear Middle School
  • Jackson Elementary
  • Hotchkiss Elementary
  • Essex Elementary
  • Lincoln Elementary
  • Erie Island Elementary
  • Margaret Park Elementary
  • Smith Elementary

Riedinger Middle School would also become an elementary school to house students from Lincoln.

The changes would force about 3,400 students to attend other Akron schools.

Decisions are likely by year's end on exactly which buildings will be shut down for the 2006-07 school year.

Public meetings begin May 10.
