MANSFIELD, Ohio -- The father of a brain-damaged boy was arrested in Mansfield Friday, NewsChannel5 reported. Matthew Stein, 22, is behind bars and is will be in court April 26. He is being held on a $250,000 cash bond. He was indicted on charges of child endangering and felonious assault. The Richland County Sheriff's Office will not say if new evidence prompted the arrest.
SLIDESHOW: Comatose Baby Aiden Stein, the 17-month-old boy on life support, is expected to die within a year from brain injuries, his guardian said. He has been in a vegetative state for more than a year. Aiden is blind, deaf and cannot eat or breathe without assistance. He was diagnosed with shaken baby syndrome last year. Police have suspected Matthew Stein of causing Aiden's injuries in March 2004. However, charges were not expected until the baby died. The mother's attorney said it's all a result of social and political pressure. "This has been such a high profile case. They really don't have a case," Edward Markovich said. The father has denied harming his son, and the baby's mother is standing by Matthew. The child remains at Akron Children's Hospital in intensive care.
