CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Clinic will likely get thousands of calls from patients about their medical records after they were found blowing down city streets Tuesday, NewsChannel5 reported. Thousands of records were blown across a downtown street Tuesday afternoon. Names, addresses and even Social Security numbers were on the documents.
SLIDESHOW: Medical Records On Street A box of 3,000 patient statements from Lakeland and Marymount Hospitals fell out of a delivery truck. "An investigation is under way to determine how this incident occurred," said Eileen Sheil, a spokeswoman for the research hospital. "We are currently identifying which patient records were impacted and will be contacting those patients directly." She said the clinic was determined to contact all affected patients on Wednesday. The records were from two members of the Cleveland Clinic Hospital System, Lakewood and Marymount hospitals. Executives in business suits and uniformed Cleveland Clinic security officers crisscrossed the area, picking up papers as motorists already slowed to a crawl by road construction watched and honked. Marymount referred all questions on the patient confidentiality breach to the clinic. "It's currently being investigated," said Mary Parsons, director of marketing at Marymount. The Clinic has set up a special hotline for concerned patients. It is (216) 444-8942.
