AKRON, Ohio -- Akron officials report that thieves have been stealing manhole covers off the city streets. About 65 have been stolen since January. Officials said the uncovered manholes pose a serious safety risk to citizens because if the manholes are left unattended, they could lead to auto accidents, damage to the sewer system and even flooding. Local scrap yards have been notified that the manhole covers are being stolen. Police should be notified if anyone attempts to sell them.Anyone caught stealing the manhole covers can face charges that range from a first-degree misdemeanor to a felony four.Report any missing covers to the sewer maintenance division at (330) 375-2666.
