CUYAHOGA FALLS, Ohio -- The Cuyahoga Falls School District is in the first phase of a recovery plan that calls for more than 120 job cuts and two school closings. The district has a $4 million budget shortfall that it needs to address.Four administrative jobs were the first to go, and within the next few weeks, nearly 60 teachers will begin getting layoff notices. The school board and the teacher's union still hope talks will save some jobs, but so far there's no agreement on concessions."The proposals that the Cuyahoga Falls Education Association did make amounted to hundreds of thousands of dollars in savings to the district," said teacher's union president Chris Mollis. "For whatever reason, the board and (Superintendent) Dr. Holland felt that they wanted to go in another direction, which was not the way we chose to go."The district said it has to get a handle on rising health care costs, a major sticking point.Last month, Mayor Don Robart appointed his own task force to make recommendations, and the preliminary findings are due at the end of the month. The city is holding a series of public meetings to get ideas from the public.Public support is critical with a $7.9 million levy on the May ballot, but the city also wants to hear more teacher input as to what's going on in the schools. The public meetings will be held every Thursday evening through the end of April at various locations around Cuyahoga Falls.Contact the mayor's office if you would like more information about the meetings.
