Local High School Students Fight To Save Principal's Job

Superintendent Recommends Not Renewing Principal's Contract

Some Hudson High School students are planning to storm a school board meeting Monday night to help save their principal's job, reported NewsChannel5 Debora Lee.

Many of the students at Hudson say Principal Roger Howard is a good person who really cares about his students.

But now his job is in jeopardy because Superintendent Mary Ann Wolowiec is recommending that the school board not renew Howard's contract.

Wolowiec gave Howard a "needs improvement" rating on his last evaluation and stated concerns in the areas of building management, planning and instructional leadership.

"(The evaluations) are performance-based ... things that have to go on, based on the job description of what an administrator in the building does," said Hudson Schools communication manager Sheryl Sheatzley.

Howard issued a written rebuttal and will make his case to school board members when they meet at the high school.

Students will be there, too, because they say Howard has supported them, and now it's their turn to support him.

"He's all about school spirit and lighting us up and making you want to come to school and enjoy school," said senior Travis Bortz.

Another student said of Howard, "He makes the atmosphere a lot better and he united the school. That's what a principal does in my book."

Howard has been an educator for 20 years. He says in his rebuttal letter that in all of those years he has never received a formal evaluation approaching any level of dissatisfaction or concern.

He also says that since he's been principal at Hudson, there have been no grievances filed by staff, no overt displays of student vandalism and no litigation filed by parents.
