Greyson's Law Legislation Aims To Make Fair Rides Safer

Mother Of Electrocuted 8-Year-Old Helps Introduce Legislation

POSTED: 4:39 pm EST February 14, 2005

Greyson Yoe was 8 years old when he was electrocuted as he stood in line for a ride at the Lake County Fair.

Now, for the first time since the August 2003 tragedy, Yoe's family returned to the fairgrounds, backed by lawmakers hoping to pass Greyson's Law to keep other kids safe in the future, NewsChannel5 reported.

Greyson's mother, Audra Yoe, stood beside state Rep. Tim Cassell on Monday as he introduced legislation that demands owners to double ground every ride at county fairs.

"Grounding rod, electrical connectors ... $20.30 would have saved Greyson's life," said Cassell.

But the Department of Agriculture, the governing body that oversees safety at these fairs, says they've already strengthened their rules.

"We know it was on our watch and it was sobering for us. No reasonable person would be against making rides safer in Ohio," said Department of Agriculture spokesman Mark Anthony. "It's always about, though, when it gets into legislation, what's the best idea, so that's what we're going to look for."

But Cassell says there can be no guarantees of safety until then.

Greyson's Law will force rides to be shut down, and ride owners will be fined $5,000 if they don't comply.

The next step now is for the Speaker of the House to assign Greyson's Law to committee.

Cassell hopes it will move quickly, in time for the beginning of fair season in Ohio.
