Athlete, 16, Collapses At Local High School

Teen Remains In Critical Condition

UPDATED: 7:27 am EST January 31, 2005

A high school athlete collapsed at a local school Friday, NewsChannel5 reported.

Andrew Rainey, a 16-year-old baseball player at Elyria High School, remains in critical condition Monday at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital.

The boy collapsed just after completing stretching and aerobic exercises in the school gym.

The team was doing preseason conditioning drills when Rainey lost consciousness and fell to the floor. Athletic Director Mark McGuire said they do not know what caused his collapse.

"Obviously we're in a state of shock when this happens ... a healthy young man that's participating in a drill that was preseason conditioning," said McGuire. "We're very lucky our coaches were present and able to deal with the situation and handle it in a remarkable fashion."
