LAKEWOOD, Ohio -- The city of Lakewood will hold a meeting Tuesday evening to discuss whether smoking should be banned in public facilities, NewsChannel5 reported. The possible ban has caused much controversy among residents already. There are already quite a few restaurants around the Cleveland area that have banned smoking without many problems, but in Lakewood they're talking about more than banning it from just restaurants and bars. Some residents want to create a smoke-free city, banning smoking in all public places. The Lakewood Clean Indoor Air Commission is a group of concerned Lakewood residents and business owners put together by the Lakewood City Council.Tuesday's meeting is the first of many meetings to come that will expose the commission's research on clean indoor air laws to the community and to City Council. The council will then decide if a vote should take place on the proposed ban.Councilman Ryan Demro is one of the council members pushing for the ban, saying it will help create a healthier city for everyone."We already have an existing clean indoor air act ... so it would be just an expansion of that act," said Demro. "It means they would be entitled to clean air anywhere they go ... I would seek to include public parks in that ordinance also."The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. All residents are invited to come and voice their opinions.Click here to view a list of smoke-free establishments in the greater Cleveland area.
